Momordica Charantia (aka Cundeamor or Bitter Melon)

Momordica Charantia has garnered a great deal of studies into its various health benefits. Regarding its skin protective properties, a recent study on M. Charantia found it exhibited antioxidative and cytoprotective properties on human skin cells. Antioxidative compounds inhibit oxidation, a chemical reaction that can produce free radicals, thereby leading to chain reaction that may damage cells. Cytoprotection is a process by which chemical compounds provide protection to cells against harmful agents. The study also demonstrated M. Charantia’s ability to fight against wrinkle formation by regulating the activity of skin changing factors such as elastase, collagen, and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) -1 and -9 and protective enzymes such as HO-1, SIRT1 fibroblasts, and HaCat cells. M. Charantia demonstrated natural moisturizing factors, as well, such as filaggrin, transglutaminase-1(TGM-1), and hyaluronic acid synthase (HAS)-1, -2, and -3.
