Cascara Sagrada, also known as buckthorn, is a traditional herbal remedy used to help with constipation and digestive problems. The components responsible for the laxative effect are called cascarosides. They act as an irritant to the colon causing peristalsis (involuntary constriction and relaxation of muscles in the intestines) and stool evacuation. Like Cascara, the roots of the Rhubarb plant have been used in traditional medicine. Do to it being a high-fiber food it is used to alleviate digestion issues such as constipation, abdominal pain, and bloating while maintaining healthy digestive processes.
